Planning is more uncertain in these Covid-19 times, and as in 2020, walks may need to be cancelled/postponed/rescheduled in line with Alert Levels.
Walks may also be changed for reasons of safety, due to track or weather conditions.

07 February - Chelsea Heritage Estate & Kauri Point Centennial Park

A shady summer bush walk to start the year. Auckland's largest coastal park boasts wetlands, forest trails, ponds, native birdlife and wonderful views of the Waitemata Harbour. Tracks lead down to secluded bays including Kendalls Bay. B walk available also.

21 February - Kakepuku Mountain, near Te Awamutu (rescheduled)

Outstanding views over the Waikato landscape from the summit of this mountain – an old bush-covered volcanic cone and pa site. We may spot North Island robins and the rare king fern. Bonus - Lake Serpentine wetlands, site of the planned National Wetland Centre, on the way.

07 March - Waipu Coastal Trail (Punakaiki of the North) (rescheduled)

From Waipu to Langs Beach, or vice versa. Mature pohutukawa forest and regenerating native bush, plus amazing limestone rock formations similar to the Pancake Rocks on the South Island’s west coast. Waipu Museum entry fee included. B walk available

11 April - Waitakeres - Arataki & Beyond

While most of the Waitakeres tracks are still closed, we can do an interesting circuit from Arataki taking the Slip Track, Pipeline Road, through Mackies Rest and then the Beveridge Track with some great lookouts along the way, followed by the well-loved Nature Trail Loop walk. Suitable for all.

25 April - Volcanoes, a Basin and a Beach

Fabulous views in the City of Volcanoes. This route takes in Mt Eden (and its new platform walkway), Mt Hobson & Orakei Basin, then a beach walk from Mission Bay to St Heliers. We will bus between points. Option for Bs to shorten walk. Small bus for the city streets.

16 May - Awhitu Peninsula - Lighthouse and Regional Park

This time we hope to visit the lighthouse at Manukau Heads, followed by some time at Awhitu Regional Park and Waiuku on the way home. Always a good trip out to the peninsula. We will use a smaller bus so book early. Suitable for all.

30 May - Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve, Karaka Bay & More

The wetlands and sandspit of the Tahuna Torea Nature Reserve will be one of the highlights of this walk, which also includes Karaka Bay, one of the sites of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, plus the new walkway along the Tamaki River from Pt England to Panmure. Suitable for all.

13 June - Mt Richmond & the diversity of Otahuhu (rescheduled)
Carpool
Mt Richmond’s craters and impressive exotic trees, David Lange’s Memorial, the sacred Bodhi tree at a Lao Bhuddist temple, an early settlers’ cemetery and more – it’s an interesting mix of nature, culture and history in an ethnically diverse part of Auckland.
