Upcoming walks  2022

Planning is more uncertain in these Covid-19 times, and walks may be cancelled/postponed/rescheduled due in part to unavailability of leaders.
Walks may also be changed for reasons of safety, due to track or weather conditions.

SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT
The Club does its best to provide safe trips.  However, all outdoor activities of this nature attract some risk.  You are responsible for your personal safety and your participation in trips acknowledges acceptance of this.

29 January - Auckland Domain and Natural History Photographs at Auckland Museum

As Auckland’s oldest park and one of the largest, the Domain has a lot to offer: walking trails through lush native bush, outdoor art sculptures, the duck pond, the historic Winter Gardens and more.  We visit the museum to view photographic images from Olaf Petersen, famous nature photographer.

Carpooling.  Meeting time and place to be advised
Leader:  Linda

12 February - Cossey Gorge/Massey Loop Track, Hunua Ranges

We will do the Cossey Gorge and Massey tracks from Hunua Falls in the Hunua Ranges which we have not visited for a little while.  This is a beautiful area of native forest,  the largest in the Auckland region.

Bus south, normal start
$30
Leader:  Sharleen

26 February - Waitakere Ranges:  Donald McLean and Karamatura Tracks

We will start by going up Mt Donald McLean to see some great views over this special area.  The two tracks are newly resurfaced, with many, many flights of steps going down. There will be walks for both A & B walkers.

Bus west, normal start
$30
Leader:  Sharleen

12 March - Muriwai Gannet Colony and a bush reserve

Before the gannets start their migration north, we should see families together in their nests here.  Their feeding and preening behaviour can be observed from a very short distance at Muriwai.  If access is possible, we will also look at the seaweed at Maori Bay.

Bus west, normal start
$30
Leader: Marilyn

26 March - Ambury Park shore birds

The morning will be spent looking at places of interest around the area before we meet Ian in Ambury Park at 1:45 pm.  Although we saw some shore birds last year, today we will have experts to help us with identification and good equipment for viewing at our disposal.

Bus south, normal start
$25
Leader:  Shirley

APRIL 1 - 4              LONG WEEKEND AWAY.     This is the weekend before Easter.   Leaders are Linda, Fiona,                                                                                  Don and John McLennan.

16 April - CUE Haven       https://cuehaven.com/

This is a new walk for the Club, and is located close to the Kaipara Harbour.  Developed by a couple who believe in keeping New Zealand (and the rest of the world, if possible!) green, they have cut tracks and planted thousands of native trees with help from local people.

Bus north, normal start
$30
Leader: Cristy

30 April - Rangitoto Island : the summit and a loop walk

The A walk will go to the summit, uphill all the way on scoria, so wear strong shoes.  We will get some superb views and may be joined by saddlebacks at lunchtime if we are lucky!  The B walk goes through the fern glen and onto Motutapu.

Carpool to ferry.  Meeting time to be advised.
Leader:  Anne

07 May - Karangahake Gorge   (one week gap, as 14 May is Mothers' Day)

Historically, this is a very popular area for the Club. The A Group will do the  Windows Walk and go through the tunnel, so please bring a good torch.  For those who want a shorter walk, B Group will go to the Victoria battery and, if possible, take a short train ride.

Bus south, Early start
$40
Leader:  Philippa

21 May - Kariotahi Cliffs and Waiuku

Geologist, Richard Barker, will join us there to tell us about these world famous cliffs and their composition.  We will also do a walk along the beach before heading back.  On the way back, we stop at Waiuku to look at some unusual trees and have an ice cream.

Bus south, normal start
$35
Leader: Praemi

04 June - Cambridge - a historically and economically important town

Known for its importance in the New Zealand equine world, we will walk the “Equine Walk of Fame"  in town.  Another point of interest right in the middle of town is the old Post Office, now a café/ restaurant..  The river walk will be of interest to those who like to spot fungi.

Bus south, Early start
$40
Leader: Linda

18 June - Helensville

A building that you may recognise as a “Police Station,” historic railway cottages, a riverside walk, maybe the Railway Museum (if still open) and an “Aladdin’s Cave” to browse through.  Helensville is a popular destination for those who like something different.

Bus west, normal start
$25
Leader: Marilyn
